How eBay Fees Work in 2026

eBay's core charge is the final value fee: a percentage of the total sale amount — item price plus buyer-paid shipping plus sales tax — charged when your item sells. For most categories without a Store subscription, the rate is 13.6% on amounts up to $7,500 (2.35% on the portion above). On top of that, every order carries a small per-order fee: $0.30 for orders of $10 or less, $0.40 for orders over $10. Listing is free for your first 250 listings per month; beyond that, insertion fees of $0.35 apply.

Rates differ meaningfully in some categories — books, movies and music run 15.3%, musical instruments as low as 6–8%, and heavy equipment around 3% — which is why the calculator lets you pick your rate. Store subscribers (Basic and up, from roughly $21.95/month billed annually) get discounted rates around 12.35% in many categories plus larger free-listing allowances.

Worked Example: A $45 Sale With $6 Shipping

The order total is $51. In a standard category: final value fee 13.6% × $51 = $6.94, plus the $0.40 per-order fee — $7.34 total, or 14.4% of the order. You receive $43.66. If the item cost you $15 plus a $5 shipping label, your profit is $23.66. The same sale on Etsy would cost about $5.77 in fees, and on Mercari $4.50 — check the full comparison chart to see where your price point wins.

Tips for Keeping More of Your eBay Payout

If you sell more than roughly $2,000 a month, price out a Basic Store subscription — the ~1.25-point fee discount plus free listings usually outruns the monthly cost. List within your 250 free listings before paying insertion fees, and remember promoted listings ads are an additional percentage you control — start low (2–3%) and raise only if impressions lag. Finally, since the final value fee applies to shipping too, charging inflated shipping saves you nothing; competitive item-price-plus-fair-shipping converts better and costs the same in fees.
